Seriously, in 3 years I'm willing to pay 4-5k.

I will pay $3100-$4100

Just trying to start a bidding war here.

I plan on driving mine until I have to start fabricating my own parts for it. I may even keep driving it then :D . I have never purchased a new car. I could never justify the steep depreciation when you drive it off the lot. I am the guy that buys your car when it's only 3 years old, pays half what you did for it and drives it for another 10 - 15 years until it dies and I donate it to a charity. Change your filters and fluids religiously and this mule will run forever. Pay it off and keep putting your car payment into the bank and you could cover most repairs. I don't have to have the newest, shiniest car on the road. I am more concerned with driving a vehicle that I like and is dependable. You will have more repairs with an older vehicle because stuff wears out. In the end you have to make a decision that you are comfortable with and ignore what others say. If it was my vote, I would say keep it. But the only vote that counts is yours.

Sorry, I already have an offer of up to $5K. Do I hear 6?

Honestly if you've not had a problem, keep it.

I talked my partner into the 2005 Jeep, trading in a 205 Jetta 2.5L. I'll never hear the end of it from his mother.

The Jeep has had (to date): new oil pan (and its leaking again... sigh), fuel return line clip (it just flew off and spewed diesel everywhere), turbo hose, fuel filter head, 2x shrader valves in the AC system, 4 satellite radios.

To be fair the sat. radios I don't consider a critical issue. The replacing of the shrader valve every summer is getting annoying. The hose was about as normal an incident for a 60k mile vehicle as one can expect. The oil pan is annoying, but we knew that before we got it.

To her, tho, because it's had to go back for anything it's a total lemon. Never mind it dropped insurance over $250/yea, the note dropped $130/mo, and the fact that it gets 2MPG better in city than the vehicle it replaced. None of that matters as long as it has to go into the shop for same-day turn around repairs every day (the AC system, turbo hose, oil pan took a week to be delivered out of italy).

He likes it, I like it, that's all that really matters. If your really paranoid, let it go. I feel more confident in the overall (as in 200K and beyond) upkeep with a VM-powered Jeep than I did the 2.5L VW motor (being we've already seen a few that jumped timing outside the warranty, that motor ain't cheap to replace out of pocket).

1. Not too bad.
2. Yes
3. Yes. But you really have to get lucky. This is a mechanic's vehicle. It will cost you a fortune to maintain unless you find the right person. Tech's will just throw parts at it. Parts will be avaliable but will be expensive. If you or someone you trust can't work on it, punt.

You cited the correct transmissionfor the Grand Cherokee diesel. However, I have read from multiple sources that the W5J400 was engineered and manufactured in Germany. I hope so.

It was a mercedes design that was licensed to Chrysler for use in various applications since they've since moved on to more advanced designs since (uses its own trans controller, etc etc). I stand corrected in that the W5J400 is sourced from a MB plant in Germany and the W5A580 comes from the Chrysler Trans Plant in Kokomo, Indiana. Either way, they are more or less the same trans with the same design. IMO, it is far superior to the 545rfe as most people could guess.

OK, I'm keeping it. I am still leery and don't believe that I can really trust the car, but I am going to hold onto it for 2 reasons:

1. I can't find anything to replace it with. I think I test drove all the comparable SUVs and medium pickups that exist. I was unable to find anything that was worth paying the money for a new vehice (but the Toyota 4runner did come close).

I was offered 10.5k for the Jeep on trade and due to the current economy the invoice price was the starting figure (before big time rebates) I was given from from the dealers for the new vehicles. I think 10.5k is a good figure as I only paid about 22 new and have over 70,000 miles. 50% value for trade seems generous to me at this time. However, nothing really got me excited and I could not justify outlaying 14-18 grand for a new, but less capable vehicle.

2. I simply like the fact that it is a diesel and gets great (for a 4wd vehicle) mpg. In fact, my most recent fillup jumped up 2mpg with the return of summer blend.

So, its a roll or the dice and I hope it doesnt come up craps.

My thoughts exactly  I would like a pickup able to handle 4x8 sheets but all of them including the Tundra seem to be styled to appeal to those "less endowed" who think they're cool  Just plain big and ugly

Ditto. I can't find anything new I would rather have. What I have has its issues, but I can deal with them as they are known issues at this point.

I love my CRD. Had a few issues such as blown CAC hose on intake side, and TC died but didn't kill tranny. Got just shy of 127K on mine and running strong. Like other posts make sure you change the tranny fluid when recommended along with filters and use high quality oil in the motor and it will treat you well.
