I don't know where I heard this first, but I've always remembered it:

Everyone says to treat all weapons as if they are loaded. That is the wrong attitude to take. If its true, it means there is a unloaded state where your safe. Believe instead that "There is no such thing as an unloaded weapon" and you will never have anything to regret.

I showed my fiance this as a lesson in gun safety, and she said, and i quote

"That is &%#*@ gross, why did I need to see that!?!" :shock:

I had a roommate in college who was de-cocking the hammer on a single-action .45 Long revolver and took off a chunk of his instep. Luckily it was all meat.

If he had hit the foot dead center, he might have lost the foot.

Think of your gun as a power tool. A remote control drill, if you will. You wouldn’t rest your chain saw with its blade in your lap even if you were sure it wasn’t turned on. What possesses people to treat more cavalierly the power tool we call a firearm?

One of my pet peeves has always been the practice common among sporting clay bird shooters to rest the shotgun with its muzzle on their shoe, with the “business end” of that power tool literally at muzzle contact with their foot. They’ll tell you, “Don’t worry, it isn’t loaded.” What’s that old saying again, about so many people being accidentally shot with empty guns?

Below, courtesy of a friend who is one of the top small arms experts living in my opinion, are some pictures of what can happen when such a practice goes wrong. I’m told the shooter was resting the shotgun’s muzzle on his foot when something (most likely an errant trigger finger) pressed the shotgun’s trigger to the rear.

This guy was lucky. The muzzle was resting in the space between the great toe and the next one. He may or may not keep the big toe. Had the gun been a couple of inches back, he might have lost the whole foot. I’m told that it was a light clay bird load of small #8 birdshot pellets.

The late, great Colonel Jeff Cooper postulated four cardinal rules of gun safety. 1) All guns are always loaded, and treated as such. 2) Never allow the muzzle to point at anything you are not prepared to see destroyed. 3) Do not let your finger enter the trigger guard unless and until you are in the very act of intentionally firing the weapon. 4) Be certain of your target.

This case is a clear violation of Rule 2 and probably Rule 3. Public schools should teach certain basic safety rules to our children at a very early age. Right up there with “Don’t urinate on the electric fence or the third rail”; “Don’t eat the yellow snow”; and “Don’t stand in the doorway of a Harley bar and scream ‘Kawasaki rules!’; should be…

My dad always told me, "never point a gun at anything or anyone you don't intend to kill no matter what". i never held or shot a gun till i was 22, then once again at 25

well, they can't do that anymore can they, you know.. teach kids life long lessons such as how not to shoot yourself in the foot both in the literal and technical aspects

kid gets "caught" knowing anything about a firearm and the teacher/principal/etc whoever freaks out and the kid gets expelled

simply because the kid went bird hunting with his uncle, mentioned bird hunting when the teacher asked them 'what did you do this weekend' another student who hunts as well asked what gauge shot gun he used, kid responds and 4 hours later is sitting at home suspended for 2 weeks

I promptly took that kid and spent about 4 days teaching him how to track deer, a few more days watchin him fling arrows down range, a few days at the firing range - ever seen a skrawny 12 year old send a round down range from a garand yell WOAAAH! and ask for another round? :lol:

I also made sure to explain to him that him, myself, his dad the RO at the range who basically gave us rule of the roost and a few free rounds for anything the kid wanted to try and the nice guy that let him burn like 30 rounds of reload .32 through his laser sited revolver, are all unique and rare people these days.. the other ones, are simply different, and often called senseless or 'those who lack reason or common sense' and aren't to be worried over. Made sure he watched what he said, did as he was asked and silently didn't take crap from anyone and if he ever felt something was amis or wrong that all he had to do was talk to his dad or I and we would get to the bottom of it

I used to seriously condemn homeschooling - thought kids really needed the whole public school experience

now days i'm not so sure - at what costs do our kids get their education - if you can even call it that?

in the Corps our weapon safety rules were

Rule 1 - Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
Rule 2 - Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
Rule 3 - Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
Rule 4 - Keep the weapon on safe until you intend to fire.
Rule 5 - Keep one arms distance away from the Drill Instructor at all times.
