very good

I change every 3000 now with the subaru's gas flat 4. I can normaly get a coupon from NTB to have it done for 19.99 + tax and disposal fee.

so I could go 6000 to 7000 with the diesel and it would still be good for it?
then what can I expect to pay? is synthetic oil that important?

sorry for being a pain I know I ask alot, I tend to want to know I am getting into something I can handle completely and I want to do my best to treat the truck well.

Haha, no worries. We all love to talk diesel!

I've been driving my father's old '93 Cummins Dodge Ram, which has been in our family since about '97. We've changed every 6,000 miles with no issues. Now we both own CRDs and we plan to keep that regime.

DEFINITELY use synthetic. It is much better for the engine and is what gets you to that 6,000 mile change.

ok I fell better about that.

Mobile 1 just seems so pricey are there other brands to look for that cost less and are just as good?

do any of you goto a lube place like jiffy lube or NTB or is this something I am going to want to do on my own cus they are gonna soak me?

it will be like 2 or 3 changes a year instead of 4 or 5 I do now so that cut the time spent doing it or waiting at a shop which is good I can keep rolling on

If you read the book it pretty much specifies mobil1 0-30 but if you read further it also says if it's not available then 5-40 synthertic is ok  And that just happens to be what weight Shell Rotella in the blue bottle is and it's available at Wally's place is  A lot here use it with no problems. Some also prefer Amsoil. I use a Amsoil air filter but I've used Shell Rotella both dino in my older VW diesels and synthetic in my past two tdi's and now my CRD. I also change it twice a year and that's about every 3500 miles for me :D

Like Joe said, Shell Rotella and Amsoil are fine as well. I have Mobil 1 in there right now, but I might try Amsoil next go around (I'm Amsoil everything else....)

I tend to go to local shops for everything... Not a fan of big business, mainly because I like to know my mechanic. My recommendation is to find a local guy who knows diesels (ask in your location-specific LOST forum :)).

FYI - Jiffy Lube has a bad rep for stripped drain plugs and that's on standard pans -
and the CRD is more sensitive (Aluminum with only ~3-4 threads)

I'd recommend doing it yourself - if you get a Fumoto valve it's quick/easy -

Greg - sells them http://lubricationspecialist.com/front/shop.aspx?catid=16&parentid=0

yeah I have only been to jiffy lube a few times, I don't care for them much. NTB has been good to me with the subaru's I have owned.

I don't have a problem doing it myself its just that I don't have a garage so I have to plan it when its not raining or find a garage I can use and its not any fun in winter.

does that valve fit in place of the drain plug?

Yes, the Fumoto replaces the stock drain plug. The stock plug should be an Allen-wrench removal, not sure what size because I replaced mine with a Fumoto at my first oil change. With the Fumoto, an oil change is mess free and takes far less time. Your only mess is with the oil filter, but it is very easy to get to. I don't even have to jack mine up, takes about 15 minutes.

Make sure that if you buy Rotella T, it is the Synthetic 5W-40. The tolerances in the engine require that it be synthetic to avoid improper metal wear. I use Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck, and recently had an oil analysis done. I've been changing every 5000 miles (about 2.5 months for me) and the oil analysis recommended I could extend to 7000 mile changes with no hitch in my giddyup.

Just my 2 cents, but a $150 Garmin will work way better than a DVD nav system every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Go for the one with less toys - less stuff to break. JM2C.

Just remember, it is almost like a disease. I've already spent more on modding this vehicle than any vehicle I've ever owned. But I LOVE IT.

Putting in my Magnaflow catback this weekend. . .

As long as it's the full synthetic you should be good to go. One of the Smallmart's in my area actually has the M1 5-40 TD Truck oil for 22.00 per Gal. The other one doesn't even stock it. You may wish to upsize your oil filter to a full quart size one too for a little extra filter media. Just a thought.

As mentioned the Fumoto valve (F102) makes things a little neater (less mess) to do your own changes. Just put one in last week. :)

Linewarbr the oil I quoted was synthetic.

I like the idea of minimal mess and done so fast thanks for showing me that. its very cool. I wish I would have know about that b4. hell I could have put one on every car I ever owned.

the NAV thing I could live with out easy. I got a Navagon portable for xmas last year. Helga does a good job of getting me around in new and different places but can be bossy.

I do think I have a much better chance of getting the deal worked out like I want on the one with out the NAV

Did you check autotrader? I found mine on there, as one of about 15 options within 300 miles of Tallahassee (my hometown). I'd keep shopping around 8)

Okay, using Philadelphia as a starting point, with a 200 mile range, I found five Jeep Liberty CRD Sports with 30-40k miles and one Jeep Liberty Limited with 40k, all for under $15,000.

One in particular is from a private seller for $13k with only 32k miles.... The original owner already added a K&N (yuck!), flowmaster, AT tires, and a Striker 1 Power Module.

Give it a try yourself and make sure you specify diesel fueled vehicles under "more options."

Good luck!

so far im approved for I think up to 15K so that limits me some on the one, but it is closer to home. we will see they been calling me they seem to want to deal on it. I'm only so hopeful on that one even if its the green I like better than the red one that is less and has less toys in it.

dvd nav and all that extra stuff is not something I need. it nice to have a full toy box tho :)

The Nav suystem on mine is so counter-intuitive that I use my other GPS. Its much easier.

Well I test drove today! I couldnd get a deal worked out tho :(

the other dealer in Delaware I was most hopeful to be able to work out a deal with wasnt willing to offer me even close to keley book value on my Outback so I just told the salesman he must not want to sell a car todday and left it. too bad too cus I was so close to paying the asking price if they were better on the trade. I guess they didn't want to take a subaru in trade or something. Too bad for them.

My search goes on, tomorrow I'm looking at a CRD sport that's real close to home I actualy saw in an newpaper ad.

I found some on auto trader too.

OH yeah I see why you all like them.
while it was not super fast like a sports car the thing was pleny powerful and just felt like it could pull. driving up hill was no problem for it. it just felt willing to work. I was suprized how the engine was not as loud as I expected. only realy louder after start up but crusing at 60 you would not know it was not a gas engine. there was no swoke no diesel fumes or anything like the last time I drove a diesel moving van. if diesel is this good no wonder its so popular in europe.

I drove another one saturday and the salesman did not go with me and a friend thats been going with me. I drove that one alot harder. palyed with the transfir case and all it modes then pulled out back on to the street and punched her down good. the jeep took off and put us back in our seats.
I could get used to having that touque for sure :)

sadly that jeep was not in that great of shape for the price. the seats all had stains that it looked like cleaning did not remove and the foam on the drivers seat was already breaking down so you could feel the metal under it, to me a vehicle with only 35,000 mikes should not have a worn and stained upolstory if the dealer wants full book prices and then some.
