I never get the flu or get a flu shot. But this year my mom forced me to get one. And If I get the flu hardcore, I'm blaming it all on her.

I maybe get a little head cold once a year, if that. But I'm over it in less than a week. What helps me? OJ, vitamins, healthy eating, and I usually have hand sanatizer in my jeep. Oh, and I stay away from people who are sick.

But with the vaccine's, it dosen't stop you from getting a cold. The antibiotics are what you get after you;re already sick to help kill the virus. The vaccine is just a weak version of the virus so your body's immune system can recognize it and figure out that it is bad and kill it. And one you come into contact with the real flu, your immune system will already know that it is bad and attack it and get rid of it before it gets too serious.

Thats probably why you, Jayme, get sick after getting a vaccine.

See.. YelloCoyote and Tomm both have had those experiences.. when my dad who is 67 got one and he has lymphoma cancer btw.. and he got the flu it really scared me.. and I already have OCD bad.. when he got the flu I was in my room for one week.. I took off from school and work and just sit in my room with my video games and computer never left it unless I had to go to the bathroom which at that point is fine because I am upstairs where as they are all down stairs.. my mom and nephew and sister all got sick but did I? No because I was isolated from all of them, I wore a mask the next following week downstairs and I also wore gloves.. :P

I know it's over kill but still I am one of these people that when they do get sick it's deadly to me, my normal body temperature unlike the rest of you folks is 100.5 I'm two degrees higher than average..and why that is the doctors still can't explain :?

When I am at Waste Water Plants. The dose is so low do to the dilution factor that a lot of the bugs don't effect me.
My sinuses and my allergies are another matter.
Perfume gives me a mega headache, go figure.
I still get flue shots, have since Ford was Prez.

Are you guys getting the flu from live virus shots or dead ones? Not supposed to be able to get it from the dead ones.

I'm all for eating dirt and not worrying about getting sick typically. But when something is spreading a bit out of control, even if most people get through it fine, it is a bit irresponsible to just blow it off, get sick, and pass it around.

The shot isn't just for you, its for all the people you come in contact with.

On another note, the distribution of this shot plain sucks. My doctor is like 'check back often" to see if they have it. Instead of talking to me on the phone every day or every other, how about making a waiting list and just calling people once to tell them their shot is in?

Or better yet, don't pass out the shots to doctors, do a phone-in sign up at the department of health, return calls to people when it's in, then a drive through shot giving session.

Wednesday we were told that my 3 year old daughter could get the nasal H1N1 on friday, that there was a dose at the pediatrician (located in the hospital) for her. So my wife drags both kids to the hospital and gets told that they ran out. I was so ticked. Lets have people come to the hospital to NOT get the shot you set aside for them.

A phone call or some responsible planning would have been appreciated instead of exposing my kids to a ton of germs for nothing....

My family and I got our pig flu shot yesterday, they had a mass free clinic, just show up. I technically didn't fit the profile of people who were to get it, but being with my wife and kids, they gave it to me. I personally am like most, I take my chances, sometimes I'm lucky, just get minor colds through the years, last year it took me out for 1 1/2 weeks. My wife and kids get flu shots every year, but they have allergies and asthma so it does help them.
There were people driving from N Carolina to get these shots, crazy, we luckily only waited 5 mins.
I agree. it's up to each person. I honestly only got the shot cause I would have to live with my wife whining about how I would get the hog flu. I feel if you wash your hands regularly, cover you coughs/sneezing, you can help prevent it, but there is so much out there, it's still a gamble. The current vaccine is dead virus, but you can still get flu like symptoms from it. Of course, my kids are playing it up on how bad their arms hurt from the shot. They also offered a nose spray, it is a live virus and takes two doses, bet you do get a little sick from that one.

I have his strange urgh to go roll in some mud... :P :P

Man, I wish we actually had a MD on here.

From my mechanical engineering knowledge here are a couple of things:

Any flu vaccine is made from dead flu virus, it is injected into the body were our immune system attacks it, and comes up with a counter defense just like it would any other virus like the common cold. Once you have had one of those virii and your immune system has figure out a counter defense you are immune from it in the future, examples like chicken pox(varicella) and the mumps come to mind.

That being said, from an immune standpoint there is no difference to your body developing an immunity from a dead virus injected into your body(so that you don't get sick from it), or a live virus you catch from the last guy to touch the shopping cart and knocks you on your back for a week.

Nothing about getting a vaccine replaces your immune system, it works with it, just like getting a virus and feeling crappy.

Further, it is a good idea to get the vaccine. There is something called "herd immunity" which basically states that the more people that have been vaccinated(or are immune) then the fewer the people who will catch the disease. IE if 10% of a population is immune maybe 75% will catch the disease. But if 30% of a population are vaccinated then maybe 30% will catch the disease......and so on.

I agree with most of this, except that I believe the nasal spray they've been using for the H1N1 is a live virus. The shots were live viruses once upon a time, but I believe they've been giving dead virus shots since the 90's. The shots for H1N1 were supposed to be dead virus though, I believe. I pay attention to this just enough to be dangerous...

Yes that is correct, the nasal versions are a live virus, and do have the ability to get you sick, the regular needle versions are all dead virus. If you get sick after a seasonal flu shot its from something else, not the shot.

Remember, Correlation != Causation.

While we are on the subject, the HPV vaccine is not a government conspiracy to get our teenage girls to have sex, despite what you may have heard on the AM radio.

The girl in the video got this disease from the regular flu shot. Not the swine flu shot. And from what i hear on the news a lot of her doctors are thinking a lot of it is just in her head. Just saying....

There is no proven connection between that girl in the video and any vaccine. More recent news stories talk about this internet hysteria passed on by the overly excitable among us. I'll look elsewhere than "Youtube" for my news, thanks.

As mentioned above, people do not get the flu from a flu shot. As the yearly shots are made up from a SWAG as to what of the dozen or so strains will hit the U.S. in a season, it is likely that some of us are eventually exposed to strains that we have not been vaccinated against, especially with far more of us exposed to international travel and goods than ever before. Plus, as the shot causes your body to mimic the flu, many people confuse their bodies reaction to the mimiced flu (body aches/fever/etc) with the flu. The flu doesn't give you a fever, your body's defenses kicking in causes that.

Antibiotic medications and antibacterial agents for washing your hands do NOTHING to fight influenza. Influenza is a VIRUS not a bacteria. The overuse of anti-bac is probably harming our natural ability to fight bacterial infections, not helping it. Tom's "eating dirt" metaphor is a perfect example. And the use of antbiotics for viruses is not only a waste of time & money, but is probably lowering that "eating dirt" effect even more.

How many of us go to the Dr. and are told we have the flu, yet no blood test is done with them calling you back 3 days later as the test takes 48 hrs to grow the culture? No, we say we have the flu because Ol' Doc said we did or we think we did becuase we just "know we have the flu" when in fact less than 20% of "flu" claims are proven by an actual test. A lot of "flu" isn't "flu."

According to the CDC, an average of 36,000 Americans die of the flu each year ( http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/us ... deaths.htm ). Some bring up the point that 36,000 is a statistically low number. I don't care about world-wide numbers as I only live here and the fact is that millions here get the flu and do not die. That leads to a huge hit on lost productivity for both companies lost wages/time for the patient. Perhaps those of us who do not work can afford to hole up for a week at a time, but those of us in the work force cannot do so in most cases. When you expand that number out to those who may miss work not because they have the flu, but their childern do and work must be missed to care for them the number grows rapidly to massive levels.

My wife and kids all have H1N1 as confirmed by blood test. Do I fear their dying? Not really. But I know my wife is missing work, my kids are missing school, I am cutting back on work, I am spending money on "comfort measures," and the symptoms are miserable to watch. I cannot hide in my room and ignore it. Had vaccinations been available in my county ( they still are not) at least my kids would probably have been spared this.

See this is exactly the point, for all you guys out there that don't want to get the vaccine you become potential carriers that will spread it to those that it will seriously affect. You may be willing to put up being sick, but what about all the people you will infect? Swine flu is very contagious and you can infect others before you even have symptoms.

The more people get the vaccine, the better our herd immunity is, and the fewer of all of us will get and miss work/school. With something like this you really have a responsibility to the rest of us too, not just yourself.
