From what I've learned the '03's seem to be safe, and for the most part the '04's too. It seems that those of us with the 05's seem to have the most trouble.

I hear you. I have seen this before in some vehicles. It used to pi$$ me off when I worked at a gas station one summer many years ago. I ended up having to clean it up a lot. :furious:

I know there are several hoses connected to gas tanks and the purpose of some of them is to prevent the problem you are talking about. I didn't know there were also valves. It seems like after more than a hundred years of building cars all of the manufacturers would have this problem solved by now but I think their are design problems with at least some vehicles. I hope your's is fixable and it is something as simple as a clogged or kinked air line. I think my TJ's problem, while in the other direction, is a design problem and is not fixable. It has been that way for 11 years. I used to have a truck that would often cause the pump to shut off when it was only 3/4 full. It didn't spew out gas like you are talking about though.

Anyway, I understand the problem you are talking about. Sorry my original post didn't seem to be on point. I should have been more clear.

When we're filling our tanks fuel reaches the point where it shuts off the pump and then a couple of cups of fuel bubble out of the tank. I searched for hours on line before I found that TSB, oddly enough it was on Jeep forum :) and even talked to a handful of techs. What it comes down to in my understanding is that a valve in the evap system is not opening and allowing the air pressure that builds in the tank while filling to be purged. Thus when the tank is filled and the pump stops the flow of inbound fuel, that air bubble makes its way rapidly up the filler neck pushing fuel ahead of it and all over the side of the jeep. Sometimes, and I have no idea what makes the difference, this happens when the tank is only 3/4 full instead of 100% full. Which of course, I never seem to notice until I'm a few miles down the road :)

Ok, Now I follow.... That Sucks! I'd be all over jeep if it happened to me. I hate fuel running down the side and it can't be good for the paint longterm.
What happens if you put in a couple gallons, let it sit (burp) for a minute or so and then continue to fill?

My '06 has just started doing it as well. every time it will spew all over the side of the jeep under the fill hole. I have recently tried listening for fill up closeness.
HOWEVER guys, you SHOULD NOT fill up to the last drop. i.e. pump shut off works fine, and you try to squeeze in every last drop. It is o.k. to put a couple of more cents in to round off, but not a good idea to totally top off to the last drop. That little room left needs to be present in order to let the evaporative canister and the other emissions components to do their job. Unless you want to prematurely replace components....

I dunno, the cap is vented...... Also, I've been doing that on my '03 (and previous cars) since day 1, Have 8 years and over 150k on it and have not replaced 1 emissions related component.

My other car does the same. Drive it normally (not lead-footed) for an hour and still.. no movement.

You need extra room in your gas tank to allow the gasoline to expand. If you top off your tank, the extra gas may evaporate into your vehicle’s vapor collection system. That system may become fouled and will not work properly causing your vehicle to run poorly and have high gas emissions. There goes the check engine light...
Why risk it? Google it, get informed.Good luck, this is just a suggestion...

Mine doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it does happen more often then not. I think I will just start burping the system while filling up and seeing if that helps.

My 04 Liberty Sport has overfilled only a couple of times.
I've learned two things; to slow down the fill just before I think it's full and not to try to pump another ounce once the pump "kicks out". If I fill the tank too quickly my gas gauge won't show it completely full.
