I was not aware....(until today).....
That K&N made oil filters, and much like their air filters, they ain't cheap at $13.99 each.....

Got about 1,000 to go before my next oil & filter change, but since I was driving by the local Advanced Auto store, I stopped in, picked up a 6 Qt. case of Castrol Edge synthetic, and one of these K&N oil filters (#HP-2009).

Because I use synthetic oil, I push my oil changes to every 5,000 miles instead of the usually recommended 3 months or 3,000 miles with standard grade motor oils. The way I see it, motor oil made a major advancement with the introduction of fully synthetic formulas, thus allowing you to go longer between oil changes, but has the standard off the rack oil filter kept up with this advancement....?

I've always looked for the better grade oil filters to go along with the use of full synthetic oil, but even those claiming to be better often leave me scratching my head wondering if it's good enough to work the extra 2,000 miles.

Anyway, I figured this K&N oil filter should be a step above the Wix, NAPA Gold, or Fram Extra Guard filters I was using....

Anyone else try the K&N oil filter yet.....your thoughts on them.......?

a master mechanic friend of mine told me that the only real benifit of a K&N filter over the Wix ( best made in his opinion) was the lug on the end to use a wrench to remove it...

I tend to beleive him since hes the one with letters after his name..

for what its worth..

I used a K&N oil filter on my PT a few times.... was not really needed..

I just changed my oil and used Mobile 1 and a K&N filter. No complaints so far, and I guess it's all in personal preference. Same with a lot of things, someone says one is great and the others are trash. Just my :2cents: but I figured I'd chime in since I use them. I also just put in their CAI so I wanted to match. :P

The nut on the end of the filter also has a hole through it, which i believe is used to safety wire the oil filter, not that useful for most, but if its going on a car that goes racing, it might be required.

I personally use purolator Pure-One. Ive been using it for 4 or 5 years now and won't use anything else. I used to work at advance and they would get "sales helpers", that talked about the different products selling points, and Pure-One was on the top of the list for filtration and capacity. But IMHO if youre changing your oil and filter at 5K or sooner, theres probably not a big difference in the different name brand filters. :2cents:

Every vehicle I've owned before this Liberty, I used standard motor oil, and religiously changed my oil every 3,000 miles. No matter what I was driving, that oil usually looked like it was due for a change.
When I purchased the Liberty I changed the oil from petro based to synthetic before it hit 1,000 miles, changed it again at 5,000 miles, and I do it every 5,000 miles there after. This stuff always comes out looking clean, and I can't help wondering if it would actually go 10,000 miles, but the filter still comes off feeling quite a bit heavier, so I imagine it's done it's job.....

I use Amsoil filters, and compared to my old ones, when I cut them open there is always a good deal more crap trapped in them when compared to the other brands I have used in the past.

yes, I cut my oil filters open after I change my oil...

yes I am wierd...

but it lets me know how well my filter is working, and if there is anything in my engine I need to worry about.

Nothing weird about that VoodooMann, like Lancer said, it's a darn good way to see how well your filters are performing, and if you have any issues that need to be addressed.

When I'm not on duty as a fire fighter, I work part time for a local HVAC company that has a good size fleet of Ford E-250 service vans, and diesel powered oil delivery tank trucks. The company mechanic always cuts the filters to check for content, and once a year he sends samples out for analysis.

I've been using the Purolator Pure 1 filter, but I'm switching to the Mobil 1 extended interval filter to complement my oil. The Mobil 1 filter feels much more solidly built than the Purolator and probably contains more filter media, since it's designed to go longer. I change my oil every 6,000 and have been using standard "3,000 mile" filters since the day the Jeep was new and never had one problem. The motor still sounds and performs like new.
