So been looking for a CRD past couple weeks. Found one and went for test drve last night. Pull out of dealer lot and merge onto rural highway, all going well so far. Then when I decelerated it started vibrating furiously. I stopped at the stop light and put in neutral hoping to reduce vibration no luck. Then when I put back in drive no go... nothing happening. Idle holding still even at WOT. Stuck in left lane with oncoming traffic at 80KMH. Family in car... Finally able to inch myself over to the shoulder. Salesman trying all kinds of excuses... maybe not warmed up enough, normal to vibrate as it is diesel etc... I have owned 3 Diesel TDI VW's so know what is normal or not! Once I shutdown the engine and re-started all was okay. Seems like tranny went into limp mode or something else? I hastilly made my way back to dealer un-impressed. Told him to check the tranny recalls etc. Any ideas? It seems electrical although no CEL. It is a 2006 with 78000 KMS on it so still warranteed.
Any ideas if serious issue or not?
Sounds exactly like what happened to me AFTER I bought mine. I topok the boost pressure sensor (MAP sensor) out and cleaned it. It was horrible and full of soot/oil. probably never changed or cleaned. I have owned my CRD for 1-1/2 years now and NO other issues.
My problem was exactly how you described. rough idle, no power, rpms low, etc. I pulled in parking lot, turned off, looked under hood. everything seemed fine so i started it and all was good. cleaned sensor later at home and never happened again.
I wouldn't rule this CRD out so I have to disagree with everyone on here. I WOULD consider it, but definately make sure this was the problem. The scary part is you don't know for sure since all if fine now.
If you want power AND reliability get a V8 grand cherokee. they are also solid axle up untill the very latest body style which is cheaper to lift, etc if that is what you are planning. Only downside to a V8 grand cherokee is the poor economy compared to the diesel.
Theres pro's and cons to everything, but the liberty CRD has alot of things that you SHOULD do right away to make it reliable and better drivability.
First thing I did was a lift...factory ground clearance was too low for me cost was ~ $1000
2nd thing was GDE tune I think that came in around $550?
Those alone are ~ $1500 I had to invest to get it up to the power/ground clearance (slightly more now than a grand cherokee) of a stock grand cherokee
Grand cherokees are simpler to lift, cheaper and can be lifted higher for still cheaper.
BUT I LOVE MY CRD!!!!
Have to love them to want one. Good luck on your vehicle search!!!
