Hello everyone,

My wife has "LOST" the key in one of the worst neighborhoods in NYC. Now we can't visit our daughter there(or PARK at least) because someone would really hold onto the key for a long time.

What would you do?

I thought of reprogramming the transponders(FOBs) but that would mean I would have to do that to the BCM(computer) right???

Then there is the lock to deal with. Even if I reprogram the frequency on the Renny( so no one can try to find it), they can still try the key on any JEEP they want.

Just changing the locks means that I CAN park there(why would I?) but I can come back find it vandalized.

Should I just change it all? How much would ita ll be?

I'd just get another fob for your Liberty. Even in NYC, I doubt someone is gonna go around everyday checking out liberty's to see if they have right key fob for it. Just my opinion though...

I would have to agree. Probably the same chance of someone running off with it now as before if you park there.

Get a new fob and a club if you have a worry. As a former NY'er i would never touch keys myself.

Don't worry!!!

My wife's key and fob were stolen last year. I bought a new Sentry key and fob from Ebay and had the keys reprogrammed at the dealer for $25. Reprogrammed the fobs myself.

Although I'd probably be nervous too, I think you should be fine. The chances of someone walking up and down the streets trying to unlock Libertys is very small. However, I would get a club just to act as a deterrent.

If the key were stolen in your neighborhood, I'd be worried, since they would know what your vehicle looks like and where you park - but since it was lost and you were only visiting, chances are it'll just disappear.

Yup, but I can't imagine that is a very involved process.

They can just buy a key off eBay and cut it randomly and try it in any jeep they want, too, but it's not a very valuable way to spend their time.

If it's that bad a neighborhood, I wouldn't really expect the locks to stop anything. Most of the time, when somebody breaks into a car, they just steal stuff out of it, they don't steal the actual car. Car theft is really easy to trace compared to stereo and personals theft. In any case, somebody willing to commit a car theft will probably have other ways to do it anyway.

You should ask the dealer what it would cost to get a new key FOB and reprogram all of them to a new code (explain the situation, even). I'm betting that changing all the codes wouldn't be that much more than just programming a single one, so if you want another FOB you may as well. You should also ask them what it costs just to reprogram without purchasing a FOB (as they seem to be inexpensive on eBay).

My wife lost it on the way to the park. She realized she lost it right before hitting the park but figured she had placed it on the kitchen counter at my daughter's place nearby. WHOAH!!!!!!

Was she glad that the Jeep was there when she got to it LATER that afternoon.

So....Don't worry about the keys? I have extra fobs. So get it all reprogrammed by Jeep for cheap?

I'll look iinto it.

THANKS ALL!!

You could also install a 'kill switch' for it. Even if someone happens to find yours with the fob then they still can't take it.

I put mine in different hiding places and use a stereo shop that I trust for the work, but there are a few different ways you could hook one up. You could use toggle switches, pressure switches, rocker switches, or even hook it up to something that already exists in the Jeep that you may normally turn on every time you start it...

Some people hook it up to the fuel pump, but I don't suggest that. The person that breaks into your car will still be able to start it and may be able to drive at least a short distance before it dies. Mine are always set up to disable the starter. Can't start... Can't drive. Before the Liberty I owned a Chevy Truck and had 'Jimmy Jammers', a Viper hood lock, and kill switch installed in it on top of an alarm system. *Truck was broken into a lot* :? Jimmy Jammers are not needed for the KJ *from what I've been told*. If you can though I would suggest a hood lock also. That will prevent someone from trying to bypass the kill switch if they get into your vehicle.

This website offers both with instructions, but I have never used them. Just happened across their site.

Here's another one w/ just the kill switch:

Hope this helps some...

Mine got broken into the other night. In my driveway. In a "safe" neighborhood. With a brick. $2k+ worth of damage just to swipe my GPS & laptop (add another grand). Went out the next day and got a kill switch.
