You will need to reinforce the area where the pivit will be located.

I wonder if you could cut away part of the rear bumper... like a square and then make some type of spacer connected to the unibody. And then mount the xj bumper tire carrier. I think that would be pretty easy

The rear structure of the KK is really strong. I have been rear ended by both a Tahoe (Totaled) and a Chevy Lumina (Totaled). While the tahoe ate my rear hatch, the hitch took 90% of the impact with the tahoe and 100% with lumina.

Oh, I have no doubt that the hitch mounted tire carrier would do great. If it weren't so much money, I would jump on that one right now! Unless I misunderstood though, Gren was considering one of the bolt-on ones.

Digger, do you think a bolt on one would work without reinforcement of the area? In all honesty, this is my first unibody vehicle and I'm still trying to figure out its limits.

I second that! my ignorance about aspects of the KK is well known on this forum haha :banghead:

As for now, im stalled in the mudd..unless i can find some one else I trust enough to weld for me. My wife's uncle is on vacation (His vaca's consist of 2-3 month driving tours of the US) and he was my welder for this little project. Im looking around now and will hopefully find some one else.

Ill snap some pictures of my ideas of mounting locations in a bit.

That's exactly how it can be done. The metal part under the tail light housing is angled and gets narrower, but if properly built up to the surface of the plastic bumper it should be pretty stout. Of course the latch side needs the same thing.

Here is where i am thinking of mounting it.

Image

This is the underside, there appears to be a great section of the rear bumper to mount on.

Only thing is i may need to cut through the top and mount on the inner section of the bumper to keep the swing arm closer to the rear gate.

This is another picture of the rear bumper.
