Ok, after reading all these, I really feel like I've been away too long. I have an 09 that I was thinking of just putting in a limited slip dif in the rear. Right now, if you get a tire off the ground, your screwed if you try to move forward, or backward. I "assumed" (i know, that can be a bad thing) that with a LS in the rear, It was a cheaper way to go and does the same thing as lockers except there is no driver intervention. One thing I'm leery about and that's messing with my drive train. Having the lifetime warranty on the power and drive train, I kind of rather just leave it alone; let the brakes do all the work or just turning around and going back home in defeat. :banghead: And no, I don't rock climb, or drive in mud up to my wiper blades but even in the snow we get around here, limiting the wheel spin is a good thing.

I spoke with the dealer that sold my KK to me and they said it's a jeep and they expect a ceitain amount of stuff to be done to change things. I would expect that if the dealer put the LSD in there that it would still be covered. The only thing that would be affected is what you put on anyway, it shouldn't affect the warranty otherwise.

As far as warranty goes, the dealer has to prove that the diff was the root cause of failure..... So if the engine goes, it's going to be hard for them to say the diff did the damage...

But if it's a drivetrain issue, how hard would it be for them to say "nope, that after market LSD did it" . So, while it's setting dead in the driveway, or at the dealership, it could take a long time to fight with Jeep to prove it wasn't. I know there are horror stories and stories that worked out in favor of the jeeper, but that's why for my lift, I'm going to a jeep dealership to have it done. They sell it and install it and they know how to deal with Chrysler when it comes to these issues. It's a big dealership and the owners son does these lifts. He's lifted many commanders and liberties (and wranglers) around here. As far as the LSD, I don't think they do these but I will ask. It's like breaking the seal on a computer case. Once it's "tampered" with, any warranty goes out the door. At 70k and as much as I drive it, I'm net yet ready to drop a few grand on fixing something that they say I caused and the warranty is the only reason I plan on keeping it till it rots  . Any mods I've done so far are cosmetic. Skids, roof rack, window vents, rock rails. Once I start installing lifts and limited slips or lockers, everything changes. Kinda torn. I want to make it a little more capable off road but mostly get it up off the ground. I'm past worrying about gas mileage with all the extra pounds and the 255/65 16's I put on it.

Whether your talking about a locker or LSD, technically it is still a full carrier sway....

Now don't get me wrong, I know what you are worried about and you have every right to be worried. Now by installing a different carrier in the diff, you are now relying on a dealership warranty on their work preformed, not a OEM warranty. As far as power train concerns go, should something fail in the diff, your at the mercy of the dealer. If the drive shaft fails, your out of luck since it is a wearable item by definition. From the drive shaft(s) forward, they are going to be very hard pressed to pin the cause of failure on the diff. Things like CV's, axle shafts, and U joints are going to fail in a bind instead of the engine..... Now if you some how shock loaded the drive train, sure the trans or tcase could fail but again it would be almost impossible to pin it on a locker.

As far as a lift goes, most dealers are OK with them, but things like ball joints, tie rods, CV's and such are not going to be covered regardless since they are wear items....

Also as a side note, I just went in for my required 5 year factory inspection to keep my life time warranty... Besides SFA'ing my KK, I have done almost every mod one can think of and I passed with flying colors. The only part I failed was not having a OEM lift which doesn't exist.

The Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act was enacted to protect the customer. If this bill wasn't passed, the dealer could void your warranty for simply not using OEM parts or using their oil....

Having heard of dif's exploding, and when I read about the drivetrain coverage, I expected everything, including the ujoints, etc.. to be covered. If a limited slip is installed in the rear, I understand it could negate any warranty coverage on the whole rear end. When I take it in for the lift, I'll talk to about limited slipps, etc..

Hey digger, where'd you source your axel parts from? I'm having some issues with parts stores not knowing about our front diff. Are they the same as the JK uses? You wouldn't happen to have part numbers or a place where I could look them up would you?

I get a clicking at full left lock. I think it is the front right CV. I talked to the dealer and they said they should be able to change it out under warranty. I'm going to try to take it there today. Hopefully they're right and it's covered. I'll let you know if they do.
If they can't oh well, it hasn't really affected my driving on or off road. But the wife doesn't like the sound, and I would like to replace it before it completely fails.
