After 30 seconds at full throttle going up a long, steep hill at 70 MPH, triggered this code. Cleared it. Did not return with normal operation for a few minutes. Full throttle up another steep hill on the highway triggered it again. Cleared and has not returned with normal operation. (No elevated coolant temp and it seemed to run fine, though possibly a little down on power by feel. Have not been able to get Torque Pro to read boost on my new Samsung Galaxy S5 phone yet.)

What steps should I follow to diagnose this problem?

Thanks as always!

P0034 does not appear to be a listed KJ CRD trouble code but a Google search suggests it's a turbo related code but that search doesn't provide specific information. Given you full throttle, hill, and speed I'd guess you were pushing the turbo sufficiently hard to make the "system" unhappy" about something perhaps the amount of boost relative to other system inputs. Obviously reading boost might provide some helpful information. My thoughts would be:
1. if it's limited to this specific situation it's probably not worth expending much energy on the issue - back off on the throttle, perhaps drop a gear.
2. figure out some way to measure boost if you anticipate encountering the same situation in the future.
3. ask Keith at GDE if he has any idea.

P0034 - Turbo Charger Bypass Valve Control Circuit Low

From here http://www.wkjeeps.com/trouble_codes.htm Codes for a WK Grand Cherokee

While this was for a Duramax, some interesting info here. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/63-gm-diesel-engines/140-duramax-third-generation-2006-2007-5-lbz-lly/350867-service-engine-light-keeps-come.html

Maybe Keith will be along to enlighten us all.

We do not have a turbo bypass valve on the KJ. It is not a valid code for the KJ based on the info we have. Hopefully you can just clear it and go back to running normally.

The code kept coming back when running foot to the floor towing up highway hills @ 70 MPH for more than 15 seconds. (I cleared it each time and it came back. Power seemed a little bit less than I would have expected.)

Thanks as always,

Maybe try removing your ECM connector...cleaning with electrical contact cleaner and reinstalling?
