Good afternoon all. I am a proud new owner of a 2003 Jeep Liberty but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to open the swing gate! I can get the glass to open but the door only makes an unlocking sound when I click it. I haven't found a "trunk" release latch or anything. I've looked and looked, can someone give me the low down? Thanks. I promise that future posts won't be so ignorant. Thanks!

on mine I just pull the handle twice . first time the rear glass than the door
If you have a button and hear it click and it still does not open try the key than open it. it mite not be releasing all the way
Just a though, let us know could happen to any of us

Never a dumb question.
It is only dumb if you do not ask.
We are all friendly KJ's here.

With my 03 Sport, I double click the unlok fob, or as I leave the jeep I click twice on my unlock button on the door. That always opens the swing gate for me.

If this does not work, then your unlock swing gate relay release latch is defective and it may need to be replaced.
I had that go on my about 3 months after I bought my 03 KJ.

another option for you to try my man.

let us know what the out come is

I had that happen on mine before, too. I hit unlock, I can hear everything unlock, but the back hatch swing just *doesn't* open. I pull the handle, it refuses to open. The next time I drove it, it opened up fine and it's been fine ever since. It's weird.

Here's my post about it, not that it explains anything:

I think the only nearly dumb question is the basic "what lift should I buy"

If you hear the solenoid when you pull on the lever possibly the linkage disconnected inside the door. This is assuming the soleniod you are hearing is for the swing gate release. The pull latch does not directly have a mechanical link to the latches, only electrical.

Not a weird question at all, it happened to me too. The tailgate had sagged in the guides and just needed to adjust the guides. I could open my tailgate but I really had to yank it. It was either adjust the guides or get shoulder surgery eventually. Make sure you don't adjust them too loose or then the gate will rattle which is worse.

Dumb questions don't exist. They're a fable.

All good ideas and suggestion listed above. If you weed all them out, look at the rear window wiper mechanism. I noticed that, when I shut the truck off and the rear window wiper is still in the "on" position on the stalk, the rear swing gate does not unlock without jumping through some serious hoops. If the rear gate "thinks" the rear wiper is "on," then it will not unlock.

I hope someone's info helps. And welcome to LOST!

Hmm, ive read all of this post and I dont think anyone has answered the question. Just pull on the handle! The key fob only opens the glass. Half a pull of the handle opens the glass, then a full pull opens the door.

I have an '04 Renegade and had a similar problem to what you are describing but mine happened when the dealer replaced a switch in the tailgate due to a recall. They forgot to reattach something inside the door (sorry, can't remember what piece) and so the glass would open but the door wouldn't. You'd hear the door click when you locked and unlocked but when you pulled the handle to open the tailgate it was like the door was still locked. Took the KJ back in to the dealer and they reattached the component that they forgot about.

haha!

I really hope that's not the solution, because if that's the case, it is a dumb question! :-P

The Tailgate motor will be controlled to the lock
or unlock positions exactly the same as the conditions
above for the Door Lock Relay. In addition,
the Tailgate Motor will be locked for the following
conditions:
1. Tailgate Cylinder Lock Switch in the lock position
(if equipped).
2. Battery disconnect / reconnect (including pulling
and replacing the IOD fuse)
3. Rear Wiper Switch turned on
The Tailgate Motor can also be unlocked with the
Tailgate Cylinder Lock Switch (if equipped).
The Flip-Up Glass Release Motor will release the
latch if the Tailgate Cylinder Lock Switch is turned
to the unlock position (if equipped) or the RKE
Flip-Up Glass button is pressed or the BCM
“knows” the doors are unlocked and the rear door
handle is pulled to the Flip-Up Glass Release
position.

Since it is an 03, you should make sure the recall was performed on the rear glass/gate lock. If it wasn't done, that could be your problem. I have an 03 but didn't have any problems with it. My dealer still did the recall one time when I went in for an oil change.

Thanks everybody for all the help! I took it into the dealer and am going to have them check it out for me. I did the pull once/pull twice thing, the get up to cruising speed to see if it disengages thing, remote and manual unlock, hold unlock tap twice thing, the rear wiper thing, the half pull/full pull thing and the just freaking pull it thing! It looks like it's mechanical so hopefully they can get it open for me. Thanks everybody I'll let you know what happens.
