I have an 06 CRD that I bought used at 112k I was told the timing belt might have been replaced but can't find any proof I know have 146k on it and worry about the belt often would it have broke already or is it possible the time bomb is still ticking. I lost the drive belt tensioner yesterday so I am replacing that along with the Alternator Decoupler Pulley and belt and it got me thing about the timing belt again. I bought all the parts from ID Parts what a gold mine for all the parts needed for this CRD.

Howdy - welcome to LOST

where are you located?

if it's anywhere on the East coast you should talk to Geordi.

To the best of my knowledge the only "partially acceptable" way to tell is to tear it down to the timing belt and check the condition and labeling on the outside. The oem belt should have been a Goodyear. The replacement belt (if done using a third party kit) would be a gates brand. That being said, it could have been done using an oem belt so you wouldn't know the difference. I think the general consensus is going to be "if you don't have a record of it being done, get it done."

I started by reading the timing belt thread about ten times and asking a bunch of questions. Then by the time I did it I understood it well enough to feel comfortable to forego the crank pin.

I'm getting ready to do this job - only remaining part that I'm waiting for is the thermostat.

I've watched the Sir Sam video(s) and have read many writeups. I'm trying to understand the need for the VM1085. Is it *only* so that the torque is not applied to the camshaft locating pins? Is that why http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html VW tool works?

Or does the VM1085 do something more?

Thanks,

Yes its mainly to hold the torque since they are a press fit.

Its also possible to torque the locking pins out of place and damage the head and threads makes the timing holes useless in the future. Ask me how I know. DO IT, ASK ME HOW I KNOW!

Yes the VM tool not only holds both pulleys at the same time but allows you to rotate them slightly to apply and hold tension in the short length of the belt that goes over the top of the pulleys. It's not necessary, you can use a sprocket buster or home made equivalent. The VM tool just makes things a touch easier and minimises the risk of having to redo the timing. In either case always rotate the engine an even number of times and be prepared to redo the timing if it is a bit off.

I have been out to the Bay Area several times as well as right to the San Diego pier, and if there was at least one or two more CRDs on the trip, the travel cost would be equivalent to just about anywhere on the East Coast.

As for the VM tool... You do not want to put ANY torque on the cams that might translate into the alignment pins. The pins are NOT CAPABLE OF HOLDING AGAINST TORQUE and will destroy the valve cover if they are forced.

I just got back from one CRD that needed a replacement cover (that I happened to have) because of this very issue. Those pins had to be cut out with a sawzall.

If you would like any assistance or to have me do your timing belt and water pump complete in 2-3 hours - let me know. I will actually be on the way to NYC in the next few days and I could easily stop in and help you out.
