Speaking of BS, check out the news article section at www.allpar.com . A short notice about the demise of the CRD. Besides quoting the same spiel about our "old" engine that "can't be adapted to meet emissions regs", they quoted an entirely off the wall scenario, saying that part of the reason for the demise was - get this - that DC was having to build the CRD's here in the U.S., then ship them to Austria to get the engines installed, then ship them back to the States!

I have two questions for the guys at Allpar - #1 - What are you smoking?, and #2 - Why aren't you sharing?

I joined that forum shortly after buying my Dodge Magnum and when I commented about the shared MB platform several people got really nasty, one of the main moderators told me how stupid I was to believe that a LX series car shared a platform or parts with $60k to $80k cars, another commented he was in on the design of the electronics for the car and that the electronics and MDS for the 5.7L V8 (shut off 4 cyls for economy cruise) was strictly a Chrysler idea and he help design the programs. What a laugh. The turn signal that I accidently broke was replaced by a part in a MOPAR box and the thing was sealed in a plastic bag with all the MB logos and part numbers, when I had the front seat out it had a MB part sticker on the bottom, the electronics under the hood say Bosch not MOPAR.

This was a lot like dealing with the Flat Earth Society. There is even a lot of incorrect info on old MOPAR stuff at that website, never mind the new.

VW will "continue to offer the Touareg"??? They're not offering it NOW in a diesel version! Atleast not in the US market. I should know, I bloody well looked around enough for the darn thing!

Ian I think I remember that it was only offer here for '03 or '04 MY, think just one year model is all the TDI T'reg were sold in US. I have looked around about a used one and have never seen one offered, not sure anymore I would want one now. The problem is finding an experienced tech if you have a V10 hiccup.

Oh they're out there. I've seen several on autotrader.com and other sites. But they're still going for 50+ grand and that's used!
Just insane. Now mind you, I think it would be a hell of a vehicle. LOTS of power, but still. That's a steep pricetag.

Wouldn't be too quick to write this motor off as obsolete. Can easily see it resurfacing with updated emissions equipment in other DC products in North America once the fuel supply issue is nailed down. Likely has more to do with being at a competitive price point after the extra equipment is added than anything else. It's designed for and already used in Caravans in other parts of the world.

The Jeep brand is synonymous with American independence and the outdoors.
The Liberty CRD is a great vehicle, with very low emissions PER MILE, and
naturally flex-fueled. The 2005 Liberty CRD exceeded sales expectations,
likely for these reasons. By both conserving on fuel AND being at-the-ready
to burn alternative, American-made, clean biodiesel, the CRD Jeep is a GREAT
addition to the American Jeep tradition.

Who cares about CA and CARB, what about the rest of the country that cares
about mileage, durability and alternate fuel readiness? Don't fold to the
pressure of shortsighted politicians in various regions. Would you stop
selling cars in Europe if the Belgians yelled boo? Stand up, be independent,
forge ahead.that is what Jeep is about!!!

Why not argue for an emissions test with 20% Biodiesel in the tank? You'll
pass all particulate/sulfur issues. With the new low sulfur diesel
formulations, most existing diesel cars are going to NEED some Biodiesel or
additive to increase lubricity anyways. Biodiesel is available in many
states.including CA. Many of us CRD owners are experimenting running on
100% Biodiesel. Hums like a kitten, and the face of the emissions inspection
guy is worth putting on a billboard.

Meanwhile, every current CRD owner is reducing oil dependence, and keeping
more dollars here in this country. What does this mean for our
shop/dealer-support? With less CRDs being sold, will we get (even) worse
support for our engines?

I like how she went around the question

I was wondering, why arent the big 3 having issues with the EPA on their diesel engines. What makes the Cummins, duramax and powerstroke different, other than the obvious fact the engines are larger the the TDI, CRD etc?????

Yeah, the Caliber I think. Not for the US of course. Get it together Chrysler. WE WANT MORE DIESEL. Do what it takes and get them here.

They are VW PD engines, not CR diesels, D/C contracted for 100k or more of them for Euro sales and possiable US sales. But it is really unlikely as the PD can not meet '09 EPA, only '07 US EPA maybe.

Vehicles over 8K lbs are considered "commercial" vehicles and aren't subject to as stringent of requirements as "passenger cars and light trucks". Although they are having to phase in EGRs and other emissions stuff for '07. It'll be interesting to see what happens.....

Actually they phased in the EGR & CCV in '04.5 model trucks in Dodge, GM was earlier I believe and Ford for '06 trucks.

No EGR in the CTD's until '07.5 with the advent of the new 6.7L CTD.

Hummm, I had a Ford tech tell me a couple weeks ago that the '06 had CCV and I was sure he said EGR also, but I can't say from first hand knowledge.
