Hey, all,

Heard this is a great place to check out. Just picked up an '06 CRD last week. Traded in my LJ because I couldn't afford to drive it (city commuting, etc).

First thing I did was change the oil. Sounds like the Green Diesel upgrade is a good thing to do, BTW. Back on topic, it seems like it'd be easy to bang up the oil filter (or worse) in its current location. Does anyone offer a skidplate for this?

She's stock for now, but I plan on doing some upgrades ( seems like a set of Moabs would look fantastic on her, based on some of your pics on the forum!), and I've already cleaned up the MAP sensor (it was horrible).

Now, what is the CCV, and where is the EGR, and maybe you all can help decipher if I need to check/clean/change them, and where they are located? I've read about the elephant fitting for the EGR, might try to get that done.

BTW, she's 51,500 on the clock. Runs like a top. Lookin' forward to some miles with her. :)

Cheers,
Chad

Welcome, and congrats on the new Jeep!

I would definitely recommend the GDE tune. Great improvements across the board, all true.

Don't know about the oil filter... sorry.

If the EGR were blocked, you would know. From what I have heard, a blocked EGR results in severe power loss. Just get the GDE tune and you won't have to worry about it 8)

The Elephant Hose Mod (EHM) is for the CCV system, not the EGR. CCV is Closed Crankcase Ventillation, which means that it vents gases from your crankcase into the engine for a more thorough burn. Unfortunately, this also tends to bring small quantities of oil through the system, which then condenses and clogs up your intercooler (or CAC) hoses. GDE claims the quantities are negligable as long as you have the EGR turned off (the gunk on the MAP results from a combo of oil and EGR soot, not just one). I'm going to do an oil change or two, see how nasty things are, and then make my own decision about reworking the CCV system.

If you decide to do it, you can do either the EHM, Provent, or homemade CCV filter. If money is a factor, I would strongly recommend a homemade filter as the EHM emits the fumes directly into the atmosphere (which, of course, ain't so good for Mother Earth). The CCV isn't a bad system, the oil is. A filter will remove the oil, allowing the perfectly harmless gasses to continue to cycle through.

Since you cleaned your MAP, I would also recommend you remove the CAC hoses and give them a good scrub down. At 51k miles, they are probably absolutely disgusting!

Hey Chad, welcome to the forum and to CRD ownership. Check out this thread (http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... hp?t=22703 )to get a good mental tally of what all the systems are so you know what it is when people talk about it on the forum. It took me about 5 months to get the hang of all the different lingo and understand what the mods actually do.

In a nutshell: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is an emissions system that supposedly cuts down harmful emissions by piping exhaust into your intake. Works fine on a gasser, but diesels have this thing in their exhaust called soot, which is bad for an intake. It also raises intake air temperature, lowering thermal efficiency and it lowers the oxygen in your intake. More oxygen = more boom, more complete combustion, etc.

CCV is exactly like stouts said. I am running an Elephant Hose Mod because it is an easy and simple modification. It keeps the oil out of my intake and pretty blue Samco hoses.

If you cover these two bases, your engine will thank you.

As for the oil filter issue, I guess it really depends on what kind of wheeling you do. I have Mopar skids on mine, which partially protect the oil filter since it kind of runs longitudinally with the filter. I believe a member some time ago fabbed up a diamond-plate cover to protect the filter. Try using the search function, and if I see it I will post it up for you.

JL Rockies smashed his oil filter to bits and was left stranded up on the Top of the World trail in Moab... that was with the Mopar skid. It's not very protected there at all and is basically a catastrophe waiting to happen to anyone who wheels their CRD.

Yeah my MOPAR skid folded like tissue paper which took out the filter and caused my engine to bleed out. I was stranded for 3 hrs during a snow storm while friends went back into MOAB to get replacement oil and filters. I now have Skid Row skids. Not sure if they're any stronger or not, but it can't be worse than the MOPAR.

All your comments and nobody has answered his question.

Yes there are some good ones.

Skid Row plates at a good price at Jeepin-by-Al's site.

Unplug the EGR connection on top of your air box. Clean your map sensor. Think about getting a Provent CCV filter. Then get the GDE tune.

Chad, I live in the Seattle area. If you have any questions about the CRD we could meet half way sometime and I could fill your head with mush!

The Mopar skid helps - but not if you're serious about off-road

Skid row is better 3/16" steel
the best was the All-J's superskid I - no longer made but they come up as used parts occasionally 1/4" steel.

several folks have talked about a remote filter - the only one who came back with pictures was 08k and he did an Amsoil bypass with the filter behind the battery (easier access)

And Welcome to LOST

Thanks much, I'll check out that Skid Row product. I was guessing that someone would pipe up and say they'd damaged an oil filter...scary.

Ok, so unplug the sensor on top of the airbox, and that will disable the EGR? That's ok to do?

One thing that is driving me crazy right now, though, is my oil pan bolt. First off, I guess that they come with an 8mm allen style, but mine has a large regular bolt in it (no doubt because someone probably stripped out the 8mm allen and replaced it). I've tried tightening the bolt to the 20-25 ft lbs, but I'm finding that it's still slowly leaving oil spots, and the bolt always has a drop of oil on it. What gives? I'm afraid to tighten it any tighter since it's aluminum. I suppose I could loosen it a bit, and put a wrap of Teflon Tape on 'er...

I see that some people put on the Fumoro (sp?) valves on them. Perhaps this will help this? Concerned about how low they hang, though. And will they leak, too? Like the pirate, who had a steering wheel attached to his belt, said: ARRRGGHH, it's DRIVIN' ME NUTS! :D

Welcome,

If you can weld, or know someone who can, just do this mod to the standard Mopar tranny skid plate for full oil filter protection.

Great idea and perfect timing, I just purchased the mopar skid plate to make something similar. Great job and thanks for posting pictures. I don't do that much offroading but I was scared of rocks and debris. A few years ago, while crossing a bridge, I received some debris puncturing my civic muffler. The car was 3 months old with a scrapped muffler. Once again, the bean counters didn't think too long when they positioned the oil filter on our KJ...
